Why the focus on “Values” ?

The idea of “family values” can bring up different ideas and assumptions from people depending on their background. For some, family values might be a concept related to “traditional” family values, where very conservative values are thought to be the only family values that should exist. That is not what family values refer to here.

Family values are, instead, those that your individual family prioritizes and uses as guiding principles. There is no one set of values that all families must follow, and a family’s values can change over time or as circumstances evolve.

I urge all individuals to consider what is important to them in their day-to-day life and more generally speaking. As you form a family, it is critical to understand what your spouse, partner, or other family members value. Together, your family should agree to a select few guiding principles that will help you guide your family.

Do you know what your family values? If asked whether your family values quality time together or individual successes, would you all agree to the same answer? Making sure everyone is on the same page will make future decisions, conflict resolutions and planning in general so much simpler.

Check out a list of family values below and see if you can narrow it down to your top FIVE or even THREE. Compare with the rest of your family members… do you have any of the same? Do your values change when you think of yourself individually? As a family unit?

Feel free to comment below with your family’s values! None are better than others. We all hold different values and place importance on different aspects of life.
