What is a “familyist”?
Truth be told, I have never read or heard about the term “familyist”. When I type it out I get the spell-check red squiggly line saying it isn’t a word. So what is it exactly? It’s a term I like to use for someone (i.e. me!) who stands for inclusive family rights and family well-being. In other words, a familyist is a person who strongly believes in and advocates for families. It is someone who is dedicated to supporting and nurturing family relationships, advocating for family-friendly policies, and recognizing the significance of the family unit within society. I believe that families should all have the time, support and education to create, develop and feel empowered through each stage of family life.
Some of the main principles I follow, and what will guide my work here through thefamilyist.com are:
every family deserves love and respect
every family is unique
a family is a unit of individuals who form a system— making sure everyone has their needs met is key to family success
families are the foundation of society and should be treated with the care and support they need.
“someone who stands for inclusive family rights and family well-being”
The goal of thefamilyist.com is to be a source of information, education, and community while being inclusive to all family structures and types. The blog will cover different topics related to family life and family formation, including fertility and infertility, parenting, childhood development, childbirth, family resources, and more! Let this be your go-to guide for all things family related and allow me to break-down the research for you. Don’t worry— I’ll stay in my lane. I am a family expert, with a graduate degree in family science, and training as a postpartum doula and childbirth/parent educator. I am not a doctor, medical professional, psychologist, or therapist. I will be the first to recommend other experts when a topic or question is outside my scope of practice.
